A bag (10) having a substantially rectangular cross section as manufactured using a conventional bag machine contains a quantity of popcorn kernels (24). A base (28) supports the bag (10) on edge with at least one joining panel (126) being inclined such as, for example, at 45o. Whether the bag (10) is initially unfolded or unfolds as a result of internal pressure caused by some kernels popping, a horizontal elongated V-shaped trough (38) is formed as the lower-most region of the bag due to the supporting orientation of the base (28). Kernels (24) form in a clump in the nadir of the trough (38) thereby enhancing the yield of the popping, and kernels (24) disturbed from the clump by popping kernels are directed back to the clump by the inclined walls (11,12b) of the bag (10).
