PURPOSE: To prevent fretting by providing a backing ring fitting at a journal end and a circular ring interposed between an inner race and the backing ring, radially spacing the circular ring outwardly from the journal, and radially maintaining the backing ring. CONSTITUTION: A bearing assembly includes seal rings 22, 24 located against cones 36 and seals 26 fitted into an end of a cup 30. The outer seal ring 22 is clamped between an end cap 10 and the outer cone 36, whereas the inner seal ring 24 is clamped between the inner cone 36 and a backing ring 28. One end of the inner seal ring 24 abuts a back face of the inner cone 36, while the other end is held by the backing ring 28 so as to remain concentric to while being spaced outwardly from a journal 4. Thus, a slight clearance exists between the inner seal ring 24 and a cylindrical surface of the journal 4 to prevent fretting due to slight flexures in the journal 4 along the surface of the journal 4. |
