PURPOSE:To profitably obtain 4,4'-diethylbiphenyl useful as a raw material for heat-resistant high molecular materials from biphenyl and an industrially indexpensive polyethyltoluene mixture in a high selectivity and in a high production efficiency. CONSTITUTION:When a 4,4'-diethylbiphenyl is produced by subjecting biphenyl(BP) and a profitable raw material, polyethyltoluene compounds (EnT) mixture, to a transalkylation(TA) reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst, the EnT mixture containing diethyltoluene and triethyltoluene and having an average ethyl group number of 1.1-3.9 per benzene ring is employed as the TA agent to enhance the selectivity of the objective compound. Especially when the acid catalyst is a Friedel crafts catalyst, the objective compound is obtained in the substantially same high selectivity as by conventional methods and in a far higher production efficiency than by conventional methods. Since a fraction lighter than the BP can be employed as the TA agent after the ethylation reaction and since other components excluding the objective compound can be recycled, all amounts of the raw materials can be converted into the objective compound. |
