PURPOSE:To obtain an alkenyl benzene capable of being converted into naphthalene dicarboxylic acid useful as a raw material for high molecular materials in high yield and in a high purity without directly using expensive metallic potassium having a large danger of firing. CONSTITUTION:When an alkyl benzene, preferably either one of toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-, m- or p-xylene, is reacted with 1,3-butadiene in the presence of a catalyst to produce an alkenylbenzene, the reaction is performed in the presence of a catalyst produced by dispersing and thermally treating (a) metallic sodium, (b) potassium carbonate and (c) a preliminarily treated inorganic oxide such as alumina, magnesium silicate, calcium silicate, zeolite or silica-alumina under an atmosphere substantially free from oxygen and water, thereby safely and efficiently providing the objective compound in a high purity, while the production of by-products difficult to separate is prevented. The catalyst is preferably prepared by mixing and dispersing the component (b) and the component (c) and subsequently dispersing and thermally treating the produced inorganic composition and the component(a). |
