The tensioner has an axially moving piston (3) and rod carrying the tensioner arm (5), both of which are hollow (9) to take another internal coaxial control piston (7) and rod (8). The piston and rod (7,8) also revolves as well as axially oscillating. The control piston rod (8) carries a circular piston (12) on its free end, and a sleeve (10) sealed in the casing (1) at its other end. To move the tensioner piston rod (4) only that part (9a) of the void (9) between the tensioner arm and the circular piston is charged with pressure fluid through the extension sleeve (10) and bore (19).
