An additive for rubber, as a filler or extender, is a carbonaceous and/or siliceous powder or fibrous material of required particle size, obtd. from plant or vegetable materials. Pref. the additive is a powder with particle size up to 75 microns, and with C content 20-40% and siliceous content 50-60%, or C content below 10% and siliceous content above 60%. It may incorporate a processing aid and/or coupling agent. It is made by processing a plant or vegetable material (esp. bagasse) to form an ash (esp. furnace ash and fly ash), and treating the ash (esp. fly ash) to produce a carbonaceous and/or siliceous powder or fibrous material of required particle size.
