The toilet bowl ventilating device including a lid with a base and cover forms a hollow piece with an air intake (34) for receiving odoriferous air from the bowl and an exhaust opening. A module with inlet, outlet, filter and impeller is located within the hollow in the lid to draw air through the inlet and discharge through the exhaust. The filter includes a hollow body contg. the filter material whilst a duct is connected between the hollow body and the outlet. The hollow body has an air-pervious continuous inner side wall (72) which defines a chamber which houses the impeller mounted to produce an airflow parallel to the base. The impeller is driven by a d.c. electric motor fixed to the lid with a vertical shaft. The impeller has a number of vanes (102) and an annular flange (100) extending radially from the hub parallel to the base. A battery mounted in a compartment in the seat powers the motor.
