In the sepn. of benzene from 1,2-dichloroethane (I) recovered from vinyl chloride prodn. after the sepn. of vinyl chloride and HC1, crude (I) from the base of the vinyl chloride column was sepd. into a stream 1 that was free of a high boiling substance, (Kp 760 above 83.7 deg.C) and a stream 2 contg. the high boiling substance. Stream 1 was treated with C12 at 30-85 deg.C in the presence of metallic iron. The treated and untreated streams were combined and treated with Cl2 at 30-85 deg.C. The prod. was distilled to give (I). Pref. stream is treated with 15g CR2 for every kg of (I). The Cl2 treated stream 1 is post reacted in a delay zone for 5-15 min. The post reacted stream 1 is combined with stream 2 and treated with 0.6-1.7g Cl2 per kg of (I). ADVANTAGE - Corrosion of the distn. appts. is avoided.
