The horizontal filter for horizontal compression of an incoming video signal uses sampling ofthe luminance and chrominance values via multiplexers with the filter providing corresponding mean values for a reduced image. Pref. the chrominance signal components (W,V) are fed to a multiplexer (1) with a switching frequency of less than the line frequency, providing the chrominance signal (C). This is fed to a second multiplexer (2) with a switching frequency which is half the image frequency, for combining with the luminance signal component (Y), its output fed to the filter via an A/D converter (3) with a reduced sampling rate.
