The rotary microtome has a base part (12) on which a microtome housing (14) and a blade holder (16) are arranged, and a tank (31) for receiving thing slices cut from a sample (26). The tank has two spaced-apart side portions (36) and a connecting front portion (38) forming a U-shaped plan section, the U-shaped tank (31) enclosing the blade holder (16) on three sides and the side portions (36) and the microtome housing being connected in an externally flush manner. The blade holder (16) pref. has a smaller cross-section than does the microtome housing to allow flush fitting of the U-shaped tank (31). ADVANTAGE - Almost no additional space is required specially for tank.
