Polymers contg. delta-lactam units with structural units of formulae (1b), and corresp. precursor polymers with structural units of formula (1a) and copolymers contg. these structural units are claimed. In formulae, R1 - R3 are H, Me, or Et; R4 is 1-4C alkyl; and R5 is H or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, or aromatic gp.. Prepn. of polymers with structural units (1a) comprises (a) preparing homopolymers, equimol, amts. of acrylate ester of formula CH2=C(R3)-C(O)-O-R4 and allyl alcohol of formula (CC2=CHCR1R2OH (3) are radically polymerised, and (b) preparing copolymers, blocks of polymer from (a) and blocks of different compsn. successively through sequential polymerisation. USE/ADVANTAGE - Polymers with structural units of formula (1a), alone or with crosslinking components, for prepn. of hardenable coatings (claimed) by crosslinking through OH gps. thermally or with bisepoxides, di-isocyanates, phenolic resins, or aminoplastis; polymers with structural units of formula (1b) in nonlinear optics (claimed), Polymers with units of (1b) type are readily sol. and have excellent film-forming properties, mechanical and optical properties can be varied according to amine (partic. aromatic) used for amide formation.
