A composite comprises at least one prepreg. layer (3) of high-modulus continuous filaments in a resin matrix, and at least one thin film (5) of syntactic foam with rigid microballoons uniformly dispersed in a matrix resin co-curable with that of the prepreg. There may be several layers and several films, or an innermost film separated from the composite outer surface by 1-10 prepreg layers. Filaments are e.g. glass carbon, graphite, polyphenylene-terephthalamide, Al, steel, W or B, and the resin is e.g. epoxy, bismaleimide, phenolic, polyester, polyimide or acetylene terminated resin. The microballoons are e.g. of glass, quartz, carbon, phenolic resin or thermoplastics.
