Disclosed is the use of polymers containing 20 to 70 % by wt. of a hydrophobic monomer selected from the group comprising long-chain alpha -olefins, long-chain alkyl methacrylates, vinyl esters of long-chain carboxylic acids, long-chain vinyl ethers or mixtures of these monomers, 1 to 60 % by wt. of a monomer containing a special polysiloxane group and 20 to 35 % by wt. of water soluble unsaturated acids, unsaturated C4-C6 dicarboxylic-acid anhydrides, half-esters or half-amides of unsaturated C4-C6 dicarboxylic acids or mixtures of these monomers, in partly neutralized form, as an aqueous solution or dispersion for softening or oiling of leathers or furs, or for providing them with a water-repellant finish.
