Surface hardness increase of titanium material components - by deoxidising thermal treatment, and application of nitrogen diffusion coating

Surface hardness of Ti components is increased by (i) deoxidising thermal treatment under vacuum, and (ii) reaction with nitrogen at part pressure and elevated temp. to form a N2-diffusion coating on the component surface. Deoxidising treatment occurs at ca. 10 power -3 mbar and 400 deg.C, N2-diffusion at ca. 850 deg.C and 10 mbar. Final cooling of the component takes place in an atmos. of inert gas, pref. N2. USE/ADVANTAGE - An environmentally acceptable, simple process using proven appts. to increase surface hardness in Ti materials.
