Thermal recycling of waste material (I) by a combination of known processes such as pyrolysis, comminution, sizing, degasification and gas purificn., comprises pyrolysing (I) in the absence of air at up to 800 deg.C in a carbonisation process to produce a gaseous hydrocarbon-contg. pyrolysis crude gas and a solid pyrolysis residue. The crude gas is removed at temperatures higher than the condensn. temp. of the gaseous hydrocarbons. The solid residue is sepd. by comminuting and sizing to produce coke like enriched fines and an organic contaminant free coarse material consisting of metallic components. The crude gas, fines, and additional liq. fuel are fed into a degasification reactor and auto-thermally reacted with a free-oxygen contg. degasification agent to form a CO- and H2-contg. gas and a mineral residue. The ratio of free oxygen to carbon in the gas, fines and fuel is controlled so that the temp. in the reactor is above the melting temp. of the mineral residue and a liquid slag is produced. This slag is cooled, granulated in contact with water and removed from the reactor. The CO- and H2-contg. gas is cooled and liberated from sulphur cpds., halogenated hydrocarbons and aerosols. The coarse prod. is recycled in a specific process. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used to recycle waste such as household waste, plastic-contg. industrial waste, dye residue, used tyres, shredder-lightweight waste from motor car recycling or oil-contaminated waste without extensive pretreatment.
