The device has a controller (5) for controlling the transmission of the data and a programming component for programming the device. A power source for the device comprises a power storage device (8) and a power extraction component (9) capable of extracting power from the environment in which the data communication device is located when in use. A data communication system includes the device and a reader for receiving electromagnetic radiation from the device. The reader includes a perceptive filter adapted to distinguish radiation received from the device from radiation received from other sources.

A data communication system, comprising: a data communication device for attachment to an object, the device comprising: a flexible substrate;a transmitter adapted to transmit data in the form of electromagnetic radiation wherein the data that is transmitted comprises descriptive data and content data, the descriptive data defining a category of the content data;a programmable memory;a controller for controlling the transmission of the data;a programming means for programming the device; and,a power source having: a power storage device; and,a power extraction means capable of extracting power from the environment in which the data communication device is located when in use; and a reader for receiving electromagnetic radiation from a plurality of data communication devices that transmit content data in a plurality of different categories, the plurality of data communication devices including said data communication device, wherein the reader comprises a perceptive filter configured to distinguish data received from the data communication device from data received from other ones of the plurality of data communication devices, the perceptive filter being further configured to determine if content data received from at least one data communication device is relevant to the reader based on the descriptive data and to process the content data only from one or more of the plurality of data communication devices whose content data is relevant to the reader.
