PURPOSE:To suppress the generation of lead sulfate on the surface of an electrode plate in a formation tank and improve the self-discharge characteristic by washing an unformed electrode plate with an aqueous solution of a surface active agent having a pH buffer action before dipping it in the formation tank. CONSTITUTION:An unformed electrode plate is dipped in an aqueous solution of a surface active agent having a pH buffer action at the concentration of 0.01-1g/l or showered with it for washing before it is dipped in a formation tank. The lead sulfate and basic lead sulfate in the unformed electrode plate are reacted with dilute sulfuric acid and easily dissolved, the anode reaction progresses, and the crystallization of lead dioxide progresses. The dilute sulfuric acid infiltrates into the electrode plate via the surface active agent, the pH change is suppressed by the pH buffer action, and the reduction of the concentration of sulfuric acid in the electrode plate can be offset. The capacity reduction of a battery due to the self-discharge can be suppressed. |
