PURPOSE:To provide a phosphonate type chelate resin having high exchange capacity and cycle strength. CONSTITUTION:A phosphonate type styrenic chelate resin having a -CH2PO3H2 group with a specific surface area of 10-100m<2>/g, a pore volume of 0.2-1.0ml/g, cation exchange capacity of 8.0meq/g more and acid-alkali intensity of 95% or more and porous chloromethyl group-containing cross-linked polystyrene with specific porosity and specific chlorine content are phosphorized and subsequently hydrolyzed to produce a phosphonate type chelate resin.
