PURPOSE:To obtain a method for manufacturing the title medium which is excellent in corrosion resistance, develops no change with time in magnetic characteristics, and can attain a high corrosion resistance and a high coercive force even at a low substrate temperature in forming a vertical magnetic recording medium of a magnetic thin film which has a small internal stress and can conform to a flexible substrate and a magnetic thin film using sputtering. CONSTITUTION:In sputtering the surface of a nonmagnetic substrate with a vertical magnetic recording medium by forming a magnetic thin film of an alloy made of iron, neodium, and baron, the composition of which is neodium 2-13 atom % and boron 4 atom % or less, and the magnetic thin film an alloy, a sputtering gas pressure is set at 5-40mTorr, and a sputtering substrate temperature at 100 deg.C or less to manufacture a vertical magnetic recording medium.
