Evaporation losses at the annular liquid surface between the peripheral wall of the floating tank roof 1 and the tank wall 14 are virtually completely prevented by making use of a wear-resistant, resilient skirt 21, 22. This skirt is attached to the top edge 16 of the floating tank roof 1 in the peripheral direction. A thin, plate-like strip 21 of wear-resistant and resilient material is attached in a sealed manner to the said top edge 16, which strip, in cross section, is bent downwards, with its end reaching to well below the liquid surface L,12. On the inside of the strip 21 there is the liquid-tight flexible seal 22 which, in cross section, is submerged in the liquid L. Inside the enclosed space 24 which is formed by the inner edge of the gastight skirt 22, the periphery 13 of the floating tank roof 1 and the annular liquid surface L,12, there is permanently accommodated a volume of gas or vapour which cannot escape. The liquid- and gastight skirt 22 is no longer exposed to any direct wear whatsoever against the tank wall 14. <IMAGE>
