DEVICE AND METHOD FOR SELECTIVELY ADJUSTING REPRODUCING CHARACTERISTIC CODED TO REQUIREMENT OF VIDEO SIGNAL

PURPOSE: To enhance the same function as that of a VTR through the use of a video cassette recorder(VCR) by detecting a peak level of a high frequency luminance signal so as to select a folded high frequency luminance level and recording a signal to display this level. CONSTITUTION: An adaptive luminance signal separator 14 separates a luminance signal L and a level detector 42 detects a peak level of a high frequency luminance signal by a horizontal HPF 34 of an adaptive folding circuit 22. A soft switch 38 selects a level of the high frequency luminance signal folded by a low frequency luminance signal from a horizontal LPF 36 so as to obtain an optimum inverse conversion characteristic based on the result of detection and the selected level is coded and displayed by a coder 26 and recorded on a tape of a VCR via a color signal recording circuit 30. A reproduced image whose resolution is enhanced based on the coding display is obtained and the equivalent function to that of a VTR is obtained even by using a narrow band VCR of the VHS system.
