[Problem] To provide a droplet detection device and an ink jet printer that can keep production costs lower than conventionally. [Solution] A droplet detection device comprises: a light-emitting element 23 that emits detection light for detecting at least some obscuration due to microdroplets ejected from a nozzle of a head of an ink jet printer, in the direction of an arrow 10b which intersects the direction of travel of microdroplets; a light-receiving element that receives the detection light; and a pair of wall sections 22a which are disposed to oppose each other and between which microdroplets pass, and is characterized in that the pair of wall sections 22a have formed therebetween a part of an optical path of the detection light from the light-emitting element 23 to the light receiving element, and reflect at least a part of the detection light so as to reach the light-receiving element, and the width of the detection light in the direction of an arrow 10a is equal to a space 22b between the pair of wall sections 22a in the direction of the arrow 10a at a region 22e sandwiched between ends 22d, of the pair of wall sections 22a, on the side toward the light-emitting element 23. |
