The present invention relates to a process for providing access, in a sterile state, to material which is packaged inside a sealed capsule chain, but particularly for the purposes of the vegetative propagation of plant material. According to the invention, the chain of capsules is passed, in a substantially horizontal position, through a bath containing a disinfectant, and is then transferred to a substantially straight position in which an incision is made close to each seal between the successive capsules, whilst a marginal portion of the chain of capsules is left intact. <IMAGE>
