The storage location device to which the shifting mechanism is coupled receives code specifying a shifting operation including the amount of bits that a data segment is to be shifted, and code specifying the width of the data segment to be shifted. The shifting mechanism includes a data bus having a width of M bits, and a shifting device coupled to the bus to receive a data segment having a width of N bits (M is some multiple of N). The shifting device is coupled to the storage location device to receive a shift amount value and to shift the data segment by the amount specified. Input logic circuitry is coupled between the bus and the shifting device and to the storage location device to receive the data segment for transfer to the shifting device.
