The detection circuit is used in an asynchronous multiplexing system for detecting the memory overflow of an elastic buffer by using the counting output of read counter to discriminate the failures. The circuit comprises a write counter (IC1), a decoder (IC3) for decoding first to third counting values of the counter (IC1), a shift register (IC4), a read counter (IC2), a multiplexer (IC5), a timer (10) for generating memory overflow detection period signals (T), a second clock generator for receiving the period signals to generate an overflow detection clock (CLK2), a reset signal generator for determining the width of the overflow, a warning detector, and a warning signal maintaining unit.
