A video system for use in endoscopy, comprising the following elements: a video camera, consisting of an objective lens, an imaging unit and in particular a CCD chip, which can either be arranged, together with an objective lens, fibre-optic light guide system and light guide for the illuminating beam, at the proximal extremity of an endoscope, or is alternatively mounted at the distal extremity; a variable lighting unit from which light can be input into the light guide for the illuminating beam; and a control unit to which is applied the output signal from the imaging unit. The control unit produces a video image on a monitor and varies the beam input into the illuminating beam light guide in accordance with the output signal from the imaging unit. The invention is distinguished by fact that control unit shows the brightness of the video image on the monitor, either together with the image or instead of it.
