An oligonucleotide wherein at least one nucleotide unit of the oligonucleotide includes a phosphonate moiety having structural formula (I), wherein X is: (R)n-COO<->, (R)n-SO3<->, or (R)n-PO3<2->. R is a hydrocarbon, preferably an alkyl group, and most preferably a methyl group; n is 0 or 1. In a preferred embodiment, X is (CH2)n-COO<->. Such oligonucleotides have improved binding capabilities and increased resistance to nuclease activity, and may also be used as intermediates for the attachment of detectable markers. |
