Treating a sand mould - introducing oxygen@ into the mould box after an initial solidification period of the casting

A method for treating moulds applies to moulds made of a moulding sand letting through gases and contg. organic constituents is new. After an initial solidification period of the casting, the mould is supplied with oxygen to promote combustion of the organic constituents (claimed). The mould box is opened after a period sufficient for oxygen to pass through the mould sand. Flow channels for gas are provided in the mould within the air entry half of the mould box either before or during the casting process. The combustion gases are collected at the mould and are conducted away. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in the casting industry. The sand quality is improved and the need for new sand is reduced. The amts. of used sand to be taken to tips and the CO emission are also reduced.
