New bis:hydroxy-alkoxy-di:phenyl-cycloalkane cpds. - for prepn. of thermoplastic polyester(s) and co-polyester(s) with impact resistance, prepd. by reacting bisphenol and dioxolone

New bis(hydroxyalkoxy)diphenylcycloalkanes of formula (I) R1-2 are independently H, halogen, 1-8C alkyl, 5-6C cycloalkyl or 7-12C aralkyl; m is 4, 5, 6 or 7; R3-4 are independently for each X, H, 1-6C alkyl or R1-substd. phenyl; R5-6 are independently H, 1-4C alkyl or phenyl; X is C and R3 and R4 not both = H on at least one X atom. More specifically, the X atom in the alpha-position to the diphenyl-substd. C atom is substd. only by H; and that in the beta-position pref. is dialkyl-substd.. m is 4 or 5. (I) is prepd. (claimed) by reacting bisphenols (IV) with oxiranes (V) of the given formulae in 1:(2-9), pref. 1:(2-7) molar ratio at 40-150, pref. 60-120 deg.C. and 1-10, pref. 1-6 bar in the presence of basic catalysts (pref. 0.01-2%) and opt. solvent; or by reacting (IV) with cyclic carbonates (VI) in 1:(2-5), pref. 1:(2-3) molar ratio at 100-250, (pref. 120-220) deg.C. and 1-1.5 bar in the presence of catalysts and opt. an inert solvent. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are claimed for use in the prodn. of polymers, i.e. thermoplastic polyesters and co-polyesters (II) are useful for making mouldings and have better impact stength than usual, esp. if prepd. from (I) with m = 4 or 5.
