Materials and/or microorganisms are treated by electric pulses in a continuous system by exposure to pulses of a given field strength. Their course in time is determined by the discharge of at least one reservoir capacitor and the impedance of a discharge gap. The optimum value is then determined for the time constant which is the decisive factor for the discharge and capacitance and/or impedance are corrected to suit this time constant. The time constant is held constant independent of the conductivity of the system.
