The method is for monitoring or measuring the dynamic performance of a work measuring apparatus, i.e. an ergometer, on which an individual achieves a defined effort by rotating a flywheel via pedals against an eddy current brake. A user operated calibration unit ensures conformity with the manufacturer's original specification. Calibration commences after reset (9) when the user brings the pedals/flywheel to high speed and discontinuous pedalling when signalled (12). The system decelerates to a pedal speed of 80 rpm. A timer (18) registers the interval to decelerate further to 40 rpm for comparison and display (20) against the nominal specification. USE/ADVANTAGE - For user-operated checking of performance against original specification. Calibration can be combined with microprocessor for automatic calibration and control of ergometer in conjunction with stored norms, tables or brake response curve.
