The chuck serves to support a crankshaft (1) during machining. It has a rotatably driven supporting device (24, 36, 39) which has two clamping elements (59, 60) which are arranged on a support (41) in such a way as to be movable into a clamping position and into a release position and clamp the crankshaft (1) in the area between its ends and are acted upon by the requisite clamping force in their clamping position during the rotation of the supporting device (24, 36, 39) by a drive (41, 45, 48, 51 to 54). The drive (41, 45, 46, 51 to 54) for the clamping elements (59, 60) has a clamping motor (54) with a drive shaft (53) which is in drive connection with the support (41) via gearing (45, 48, 51). During the machining of the crankshaft (1), the drive shaft (53) is driven along by the rotating supporting device (24, 36, 39) against the torque occurring. The clamping force is maintained in a controlled manner by mechanical means. Consequently, the chuck can also be used at high rotational speeds of the crankshaft (1) to be machined.
