The cooking device (1) includes a housing (18) in which a vacuum is provided and receiving inter-fitting glass containers (2, 13) enclosing the cooking space (5) for the food. A heating element is (11) contained within the space (15) between the two containers (2, 13). The vacuum provides heat insulation. Pref. the space (5) between the two containers (2, 13) is also held at a vacuum, with the inner glass container having a vent opening coupled to a vent duct, allowing steam from the cooking process to escape. Pref. the food is contained in a wire basket (8) inserted in the cooking space (5) defined by the inner glass container (2). USE - For use as table top cooking device which can be operated from vehicle battery via dashboard cigarette lighter for camping, etc.
