The device varies the level of thermal insulation of a precombustion chamber (1) housed in a cylinder head (5) of an internal combustion engine. The said chamber has an outer wall and is thermally insulated over at least a part of the said outer wall by a sheet of gas (2). The chamber (1) includes means (3) suitable for varying its level of thermal insulation.
