The head of a vehicle occupant is protected in a lateral collision by an air bag assembly installed above the window 26 behind his seat, which includes an inflatable air bag 42 capable of moving down along the window upon inflation from a container 30. A container lid 32 moves on deployment of the bag to a position along and inwardly of the window for holding the inflated bag against retraction, eg through an open window, from its position in which it can protect the head of the person. A strap 50 holds the lid 32 in position. Other arrangements are described for preventing movement of the deployed air bag from its operative position, eg straps and screens. <IMAGE> |
