Preparation of new catalyst systems based on Cu Nb K and/or Cu Ta K which are supported and intended to decrease the combustion temperature of soot from a diesel engine. The temperature, determined with a thermal balance, at which the rate of combustion of the soot is maximal is situated at 250-350 DEG C with combustion beginning at approximately 200 DEG C. In addition, these catalysts are insensitive to the presence of SO2. They exhibit a low selectivity for CO. Their performance constitutes a clear improvement in the relation to that of known catalyst systems. <IMAGE>
