PURPOSE:To obtain an optical pickup device which can dispense with a high frequency overlapping circuit and accordingly effectively utilize the light output of a semiconductor laser at the recording time. CONSTITUTION:A semiconductor laser 1 as a light source is composed of a high output semiconductor laser element 1a and a low output semiconductor laser element 1b. At the time of low output, the low output semiconductor laser element 1b exclusive for low output is actuated. Therefore, different from the case where a high output semiconductor laser is driven with low output, a stable characteristic of high S/N ratio can be obtained even at the time of low output. A high frequency overlapping circuit in order to improve the S/N ratio characteristic at the time of low output can be omitted. As a result, the light output of the semiconductor laser 1, in this case, the light output of the high output semiconductor laser element 1a can be effectively utilized at the recording time when higher light outputs are required, without being lost by tone action of the high frequency overlapping circuit. |
