PURPOSE:To provide the optical transmitter-receiver having a single optical module. CONSTITUTION:A transmitter 26 receives a transmission data signal to drive a laser diode 22, from which an optical data signal representing the transmission data signal is emitted. The laser diode 22 emits a backward optical leakage signal simultaneously. A photodiode 23 detects the backward optical leakage signal as an optical monitor signal and outputs an electric monitor signal. A transmitter 26 receives the electric monitor signal to control output power of the laser diode 22 to be a stable level. When the transmitter 26 receives no transmission data signal, the laser diode 22 acts like an optical amplifier for an incident optical data signal and sends the amplified optical data signal to the photodiode 23. The photodiode 23 converts the amplified optical data signal into the electric reception signal. A receiver 24 receives the electric reception signal and discriminates it and outputs the received data signal representing the incident optical data signal.
