PURPOSE:To improve the uniformity and stability of plasma discharging. CONSTITUTION:This plasma address electro-optical device is constituted by using substrates 1 and 2 which are arranged opposite each other. Plural signal electrodes D are formed on the inside main surface of the upper substrate 11 in parallel to each other. Further, plural plasma electrodes 3 are formed on the inside main surface of the lower substrate 2 in parallel to each other. The signal electrodes D and plasma electrodes 3 are intersected orthogonally with each other to prescribe individual picture elements 4 at the intersections. At the respective plasma electrodes 3, at least one or more discharge trigger projection parts 6 are provided corresponding to each of the picture elements 4. A liquid crystal layer is held between the opposite substrates 1 and 2. A plasma chamber is formed between the liquid crystal layer and substrate 2 and ionizable gas is enclosed. The gas is selectively ionized by discharging between the adjacent plasma electrodes and the picture elements 4 are driven while a discharging area where the ionized gas is localized is regarded as a scanning unit. Discharge triggering by the projection parts 6 contributes the uniformity and stability of the plasma.
