In this semiconductor light emitting element provided with a light exit end and an opposite end thereto, a first conductive layer has a current constriction structure that is formed so as to constrict a current injection region. The lengthwise direction of the current constriction structure is provided along one direction from the opposite end to the light exit end. An active layer is provided between the first conductive layer and a second conductive layer. A first electrode layer and a second electrode layer are respectively in contact with the first conductive layer and the second conductive layer. The current constriction structure has a widening region. The widening region is provided such that, in a direction along the surface of the first conductive layer, the width of the current constriction structure spreads out as the light exit end is approached in one direction from a predetermined location. The first electrode layer has an electrode region. The electrode region is provided at least on the widening region so as to comprise a width in a direction along the surface of the first conductive layer which is narrower than the width of the widening region.
