PURPOSE:To provide a shock absorbing steering column for preventing a driver from colliding with a steering wheel, when an automobile collides. CONSTITUTION:A rack 11b for operating an absorbing mechanism is extendedly installed on the upper shaft 6 of a steering column 3. Further, a rack 11a for operating the absorbing mechanism is extendedly installed in parallel to the axial direction of the steering colunm 3 from the lower edge part of the lower shaft 7 of the steering column 3. A gear group 12 consisting of gears 12a, 12b, 12c, and 12d is meshed between two opposed racks 11b for operating the absorbing mechanism. Accordingly, when an automobile collides, an engine, etc., retreat, and even if the steering column 3 projects rearwardly upward, the upper shaft 6 and a steering wheel shift forwardly downward instantly, and a driver is protected from colliding with the steering wheel and being wounded. |
