Stabilizers for plastic materials.

Stabilizing mixtures for plastic materials containing polyethylene comprise (a) a tocopherol compound and (b) a phosphorus- or sulphur-containing secondary antioxidant in a weight ratio from about 1:1.4 to about 1:5. Closely related stabilizing formulations for plastic materials comprise (a) from about 10 to about 50 weight percent of alpha -tocopherol; (b) up to 50 weight percent of polyethylene glycol and/or (c) up to 50 weight percent of glycerol monocaprylate caprate; and optionally also (d) up to 20 weight percent of glycerin, the total weight percent of the two, three or four components amounting to 100. Such stabilizing mixtures or formulations can be produced by mixing the appropriate components in the appropriate weight ratios, whereby this mixing is continued to the formation of a clear solution in the case of the stabilizing formulation. The invention also concerns plastic materials or articles made therefrom having incorporated therein the stabilizing mixture or formulation, and the use of said stabilizing mixtures or formulations for stabilizing plastic materials.
