The system comprises a container in the form of a tray or trough (2, 42) and at least one vessel (14) containing hydroponic (e.g. perlite) growth medium; the vessel is raised above the bottom of the container either by corrugations or protrusions in the base of the vessel (Figure 2); or by supporting a lip (29) of the vessel on a rim (46) of the trough; a wick (30) extending through the base of the vessel (14) draws up liquid (either water or nutrient solution) into the (perlite) growth medium.
