The addn. of pure oxygen to the fuel/air mixt. permits an increase in the amt. of fuel supplied for a stoichiometric mixt. with consequent increase in the rate of liberation of chemical energy. In engines with controlled catalytic converters a temporary over-boost can be achieved, e.g. by kickdown or as a substitute for normal automatic transmission.
