Apparatus for metallising the surface of a drawn light conductor (22) consists of a chamber (1) which can be filled with inert gas and contains a melt feeding (2) and melt collection (3) crucible. A feeding unit (4) is located between the crucibles with a central opening (7) for the conductor (22). Two sets of diaphragms (8,9 and 10,11) are arranged inside the unit (4) with the outer pair having cone-shaped surfaces facing each other. The inner pair have flat surfaces and define a coating chamber fed with melt via channel (12). The apparatus has main (5) and ancillary (6) heaters and gas feeding chambers (20) as well as evacuation channels (13) above and below the coating chamber. USE/ADVANTAGE - Making fibre optics, and high precision optical emitters. The quality of the coating is improved by reducing fluctuations in thickness to below 1mm over lengths of not more than 100m. Cracks in the coating are avoided.
