Removing sulphur impurity from phosphorus

Purificn. of white phosphorus contaminated with sulphur comprises contacting the phosphorus with a wash fluid at temp. above its m.pt.for sufficient time to remove the sulphur. The wash fluid is chosen from alkaline liq. or vaporised aq. solns.Temp. is pref. 60-90 deg.C. The process pref. further comprises contacting the phosphorus with conc H2SO4 to remove organic impurities prior to contact with wash liq. Contact time is pref. 30-90 mins. Wash fluid is pref. steam
