In order to obtain a largely wear-free, manually actuated dirt-insensitive switching device, useful in particular in areas where there is a danger of explosion, a system is disclosed using an inductive proximity switch (12) that is adjustably arranged in a housing (1) and that cooperates with a metallic plate secured at one end of a rod (13). Said rod (12) carries a button (8) at its end opposite to the plate (19). The button (8) is elastically retained in one of its extreme positions by means of a spring element (15) and is designed for sensing operation, so that when it is actuated the plate (19) is brought near to the proximity sensor (12) and causes its switching state to change. The proximity sensor (12) is a commercially available, intrinsically safe standard component. This switching device, which is largely made of plastic, is therefore particularly useful in areas where there is a danger of explosion.
