An apparatus for adjusting the operable position of a roller means adapted to engage endless driven elements such as chains, belts, and the like, eg the endless crawler or chain for propelling mining machines, conveyors or haulage vehicles, includes a sprocket carrying assembly 50 that is operably connected to the chain engaging sprocket 56. A hollow piston 20, having one end rigidly attached to the chain driven equipment. is slidably and non-rotatably received within a cylinder 70 formed in the sprocket carrying assembly 50 which has a pressure receiving port 73 and cavity 74 therein to receive pressurized grease. Seals 78, 80 are provided between the piston 20 and cylinder 70 to achieve a fluid-tight seal therebetween. The hollow piston 20 has a screw member 30 threadedly received therein that is adapted to be axially advanced into and out of the piston by rotating a shaft 40 that extends through the fixed end of the piston. A locking mechanism 90 is removably fastened to the machinery for selectively restricting the rotation of the shaft member. <IMAGE>
