<p>Electric traction system for motor vehicles, comprising: - at least one electric generator, in particular an electromechanical and/or electrochemical generator; - at least one reversible electric machine, of the auto-synchronous type, comprising: * a stator provided with at least one polyphase winding (E1 ,E2 E3 ,E4 ) and a device for sequential switching from one phase to the other for creating a rotating stator magnetic field, and * a wound rotor (E5 ); - at least one on-board charger; - at least one converter for converting the high-voltage direct current into a low-voltage direct current, intended for supplying and recharging a conventional equipment battery (VS). This electric traction system is characterised in that means for switching the stator windings and principal semi-conductor components of the power electronics for controlling the auto-synchronous machine - these windings and these components being necessary for its basic or principal operation as a motor and brake generator - ensure the reconfiguration of the said windings and the said components in at least one auxiliary operation mode, corresponding in particular to the said charger and/or the said converter, thus allowing the number of windings and semi-conductor components necessary for fulfilling the said auxiliary operation to be reduced.
