The apparatus used two pairs of feed rollers (24, 60 and 25, 60) to transfer articles (69), such as envelopes, magazines and newspapers, one-by-one, from a stack (67) to a transport means (62) which conveys these articles to a work station for printing or labelling. The apparatus and methodology allow for independent adjustment of the roller nips (66) between each pair of upper and lower rollers so that an article, such as an envelope, can be inserted into the nip with the roller pairs providing substantially equal nip pressure on the article. Roller nip pressure is achieved through a mechanism (50) allowing raising and lowering of the upper drive rollers (24, 25), preferably by a pivotal action (76), which are independently suspended by respective carriages (30). Upon release from the mechanism, the rollers (24, 25) are biased (42) toward the article thereby creating substantially equal nip pressure on the article even if the nip spacing is different as a result of the article having different thicknesses.

|
